"Jacqui Wicks is a singer of honesty, clarity and lightness of touch. This is a lovely first album from a singer with a long and fruitful road ahead.” - Barb Jungr
Here is what Jacqui has to say about the journey so far....
My mum says I was about 18 months old when I first started to sing, and since then I’ve not really shut up. I sang at school, in choirs, in bands and in the bath. All I wanted to do was sing.
At 14, I was in a country and western band with my uncle and we played Johnny Cash songs in working men’s clubs. At 17, I played guitar and sang songs and dreamt of being Janis Ian or Joni Mitchell. At 18, I ran the school choir and made friends that I have to this day.
In my 20’s I worked back stage on West End musicals and would often sing my heart out with the chorus, hoping that in true 42nd Street fashion I’d be rushed on stage when the leading lady broke her leg. It never happened.
In my 30’s I worked hard at my job as a project and events manager in museums, theatre and television. I still sang, but less and less as the day job grew and grew and on my 40th birthday I decided in true Elvis fashion ‘It’s Now Or Never’ and gave up the day job.
Since then I have been extremely lucky and privileged to have some wonderful teachers, work with some fine musicians and play in some great venues.
Highlights to date; playing with Echo Four Two at Leeds Town Hall, my first gig with a 20 piece big band; playing the legendary Leeds City Varieties with The Sex Patels for Chumbawamba’s 25th birthday; supporting The Blockheads with The Sex Patels at The Sage in Gateshead; an impromptu Country sing-along with Gareth Rowan and BJ Cole at The What’s Cookin’ all dayer in London; playing my ukulele at Lauderdale House, with my long time friend and teenage busking partner Judith; directing the chorus of ‘Where’s Vietnam’ for Red Ladder Theatre; working with Harry Hamer and Adam Smith on The Senior Citizens Orchestra; and last but not least finding a musical soul mate in my dear friend Kevin James who has done some fabulous arrangements for me and accompanies me so beautifully at the countless gigs in pubs, clubs and bars we’ve done over the past three years
