Roots'n' Shoots Presents....LITTLE Giants

Fri 10 September

Roots 'n' Shoots is please to have local talent Little Gaints gracing the Peaock Lounge stage....

LITTLEgiants’ music is a unique blend of old time, blues, country, bluegrass, rockabilly and just about anything as long as it’s raw, and passionate. They were formed by husband and wife Martin and Ruth Nuttall following the break up of their previous band Five Corners, with a view to playing and writing music that encompassed all their influences and at the same time keeping it simple and accessible. Things really started to happen when Morley Hilton joined the couple on upright bass, they met by accident over a 50’s Ford pick-up truck and haven’t looked back since. With the final addition of Andy Greaves on the devil’s mandolin and guitar and Jim Bottomley on fiddle (who Martin plays with in the Tragics) , the line up was complete and armed with a set of new songs, some original, some traditional, LITTLEgiants’ raw old time sound went public. They have played recent supports to the likes of Emily Barker & Red Clay Halo, Ten Bears and Rook & the Ravens. Incorporating banjo, guitar, harmonica, accordion, slap bass and mandolin, they bring a new twist to traditional sounds. Their debut recording, the 5 track EP “Welcome to our House” was recorded by the band ‘live’ around a single microphone with no over dubs or fancy stuff to give an honest representation of the bands front room.

Supporting littleGIANTS will be Dan Collins and Dave Rigg of the Long Trick.

Friday Social (OCT)

Fri 01 October

New to the calendar!!! Peacock Lounge are proud to announce a new night which is to be run every first Friday of the month...The Friday Social..

The Friday Social is a monthly night showcasing some of the fabulous unsigned talent yet to hit the big time. The night is based on the New York coffee-house vibe of the 1960's when venues in places like Bleecker Street and MacDougal would host then unknown's like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. We have tried to recreate this vibe, hosting an eclectic range of unsigned artists monthly, within a cozy,candle-lit atmosphere so come on down on a Friday, sit back, say hi and relax... : )

This month we have James Forde.

James Forde is a singer / songwriter hailing from Leeds, England via Canada. Blending country / folk guitar with more modern indie melodies, he has been writing and performing since the age of fourteen in venues in England, Ireland and Canada. With influences such as Bob Dylan, Beth Orton, Neil Young and Johnny Cash, James's perfomance is set to be fantastic.

Roots 'n' Shoots Presents....Edwina Hayes

Fri 08 October

What a treat we have for you this evening. As part of Roots 'n' Shoots comes the amazing Edwina Hayes...be prepared to be blown away!!

Edwina Hayes is a singer/songwriter who has been a regular performer on both the British and Nashville acoustic scene since 1999. Born in Dublin and raised in Lancashire, Edwina's beautifully crafted songs and natural stage presence have led her to some of the UK's finest stages.

Dividing her time between England and America, Edwina's second home is Nashville where she is much respected on the song-writing circuit. She has been a regular performer at such haunts as The Bluebird Cafe, 12th & Porter, Brown's Diner and the Sherlock Holmes.  Her influences include Ray Charles, Carole King, Van Morrison, Nanci Griffith, Richard Thompson and Bob Dylan.

As well as writing on her own, Edwina has co-written with friends including Boo Hewerdine, Ricky Ross. Don Rollins (who recently penned It's Five O Clock Somewhere for Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffet) and Bobby Wood.

In 2005 Edwina released her debut album OUT ON MY OWN on the Warner Brothers label on which she was joined by the likes of Clive Gregson, Dr Hook`s Dennis Locorriere and Christine Collister. One of the tracks was chosen to go on the No.1 bestselling CD 'Acoustic Love.'

Michael Parkinson and Bob Harris have been tremendous supporters of Edwina on BBC Radio 2.

During the past 3 years, Edwina has toured the UK three times with Nanci Griffith, opened 26 shows for Jools Holland, played twice with Van Morrison and performed 2 concerts for Michael Parkinson at his Maidenhead pub. In the same period Edwina has also performed with Ricky Ross, Loudon Wainwright III, Roy Harper, Lulu, Julie Fowlis, Sandi Thom and Daniel Beddingfield.

Her new album POUR ME A DRINK looks set to have the same success as its predecessor. Her decision to record a stripped-back sound pays dividends on Hayes` exquisite self-penned material, allowing plenty of room for her gentle guitar picking and unrelentingly beautiful voice. The gentle melancholy of Hayes` mellow folk-pop couldn`t sound better. When Perez Hilton featured her MySpace page on his USA website blog, her site received 20,000 hits (including 100 album sales) - in just two hours! Another 17,000 hits and more sales followed shortly after.

"Her solo shows are a pleasing blend of well crafted songs - beautifully sung and played - coupled with a natural charm that audiences everywhere find appealing. After a few minutes in her company even the largest crowd become a close friend".

"There are many un-mined treasures studding the UKs live circuit and surely Yorkshire- based vocalist Edwina Hayes shines brightly among them. Possessed of a softly crystalline voice and a gentle country-folk sensibility she`s built up an enviable reputation as a solo artist".  ROCK & REEL Aug 2008

Radio Caroline - "We have not heard a singer, singing live, with such natural talent in many years"Michael Parkinson - "A very talented young lady"

Nanci Griffith - "A wonderful young woman, so gifted and full of song, with a voice that is as sweet as the angels"

Time Out - "Haunting vocals"

Get Rhythm - "Sweet, honeylike, relaxing songs"

Virgin Radio - "We think she`s gonna go all the way

Whiskey on the Shelf Presents...The Skip Rats

Fri 15 October

THE SKIP RATS - Based in the North East of England, the Skip Rats have been well established on the rockin' scene, both in Europe and the UK since 1986.

A real authentic sound with rhythm guitar/vocals, double bass & lead guitar... this is the real deal!

The Skip Rats were formed in 1986 by Col Mee, Joe Guillan and Mickie Downey. Col and Joe both played together in The Sure Shots, Col as drummer and Joe as lead guitarist. It was because of Col's love of early rockabilly and the opportunity to perform self penned songs that created the urge to form a new band.

Roots 'n' Shoots Presents...Rosie Doonan & The Snapdragons

Fri 12 November

Roots 'n' Shoots is proud to have the wonderful and spell binding Rosie Doonan performing for you this evening...

ROSIE DOONAN is an exciting young performer presently collaborating with string-playing musician friends to form Rosie Doonan & The Snap Dragons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnflQ73HjLQ&feature=related

A new collaboration from this exciting young performer featuring violin and cello. This powerful sound is the perfect back-drop to some outstanding songs, complimenting her own guitar and piano playing. Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Rosie released her debut solo album "Moving On` to critical acclaim and is about to release a new CD with The Snap Dragons

Growing up in Wakefield, Rosie lived in a house overflowing with music and musicians - her dad played uilean pipes in folk luminaries Hedgehog Pie and an "uncle` was in Lindisfarne . "I guess you could say it wasn`t your average childhood. We would go to every festival going." explained Rosie. "All the kids would hang around together and then we`d go and see our parents play in bands. It gave me a good grounding in what being a musician is all about."  Rosie formed a successful duo with friend Ben Murray and the pair were duly rewarded with a Radio 2 Folk Award Nomination. Inevitably Rosie felt the urge to strike out on her own. And as a result, her recently released  solo album "Moving On`  has received much critical acclaim with her "Enya-esque` songs making compelling listening. She is presently recording an album with The Snap Dragons for a 2010 release. Also available as a solo performer.

"It`s a great sound &mdash not folk, or pop- just excellent songs beautifully sung and played". The Processed Pea
